32 Grounds, Kelsey 142 "Forest Festival Button" This button design was created and submitted for the local Mason County Forest Festival. This is a yearly celebration for the city of Shelton and Mason County to celebrate the history of timber. This year's theme was "Legends of the Timber". Based on the theme, I created this design from images in my mind. I sketched the images and used crayons, pencil, and dry erase marker to outline Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox. I was honored to receive a Honorable Mention for this button design at the Forest Festival Coronation Night. Red Mason Forest Adventures Union 4-H Club
33 Vance, Katelin 143 A clay plate crafted using a template, and then I used stamps to create the picture seen on the piece. For stamps, I used a bee stamp, I drew little lines, a big flower stamp, and then a circular sphere type shape to make the bubble looking indents. I then used different colored glazes to create a picture and decorate it with color such as purple for the outside, green for the leaves and stems, and then yellow for the flowers and bees. It was then fired in the kiln to harden and solidify the clay. Blue Mason Steamboat Island 4-H Club
33 Vance, Katelin 144 With the help of an experienced adult, we took molten glass and made a spherical shape, which can be used as a pretty art piece, or a paperweight. We then rolled the hot piece of glass in purple and white colored crystals. Rolling it around caused the colors to move, which created the swirling effect. We then shaped the glass, putting it in the hot oven every now and again, to keep it hot and shapeable. We slowly whittled it down the bottom of the glass paperweight, using metal tong like objects, which are coated in bees wax. We did this until it was small enough to break off. We then took the piece over to a temperature controlled oven, which is used to safely slow cool the items down. I got to break the piece off the stem, and then after cooling down, it was ready, and I made my own paperweight using glassblowing techniques. Blue Mason Steamboat Island 4-H Club
